Core Web Vitals are Google's official set of performance metrics, and they directly affect where your Shopify store ranks in search results. At Netalico, we've been building and optimizing Shopify stores since 2013, and we've seen how a few targeted changes to LCP, CLS, and FID can meaningfully move both rankings and revenue.
Mark Lewis, Founder and CEO of Netalico, puts it plainly: most merchants know their site is slow, but they don't know why it's slow. Core Web Vitals give you a framework to answer that question with real data.
What Are Core Web Vitals?
Core Web Vitals are a standardized set of real-world performance measurements Google uses to evaluate page experience. There are three primary signals:
● Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): Measures how long it takes for the largest visible element above the fold to fully load. On Shopify stores, this is almost always your hero image or a large product photo. LCP should be under 2.5 seconds.
● Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): Measures how much your page layout shifts during load. When app-injected elements load late and push content around, CLS scores take a hit. The target is a score below 0.1.
● First Input Delay (FID): Measures the delay between a user's first click and the browser's response. Major technical issues are usually the culprit when FID is a problem, but it's the least common failing on well-built Shopify stores.
How Do You Measure Core Web Vitals on Shopify?
There are three tools worth knowing:
● Google Search Console: The most authoritative source for how Google actually sees your store's performance. Data is collected from real users over time, so it lags improvements by a few days to a few weeks.
● Google PageSpeed Insights: Gives you a fast snapshot and flags specific elements dragging down your scores. Ignore the overall speed score; focus on the Core Web Vitals section at the top and the diagnostics below it.
● Chrome Lighthouse: Runs inside Chrome DevTools and lets you test in real time. Particularly useful when you've just made a change and want to see the impact before waiting for Search Console to update.
One important caveat on the PageSpeed recommendations: some of what Google suggests can actually make things worse. Lazy loading images sounds sensible, but if you lazy-load your LCP image, you'll increase your LCP time. We see this mistake regularly.
How Do You Fix CLS on a Shopify Store?
CLS is usually the easiest Core Web Vital to improve. The most common cause on Shopify stores is third-party apps loading their elements after the main content has already rendered, which shifts everything around on screen.
Start by running Lighthouse and capturing a slow-motion trace of your page load. Look for which elements are moving and when. In most cases, fixing CLS means adding CSS that reserves space for those elements before they load, so their appearance doesn't displace existing content. For app-injected elements, you often need to copy the relevant CSS rules into your main theme stylesheet.
Uninstalled apps are also a common culprit. Even after an app is removed, the scripts it left behind frequently continue loading, adding layout jitter and slowing your LCP. Audit your theme code for orphaned scripts and remove them.
How Do You Fix LCP on a Shopify Store?
LCP is more complex because several factors can contribute. The highest-impact fixes are:
- Optimize your hero and product images. Use compressed, properly sized files. Shopify's CDN handles a lot of this, but oversized source images still slow things down.
- Preload your LCP image. Add a preload hint in your theme's head section so the browser fetches that image as early as possible rather than discovering it later in the parse queue.
- Remove unused scripts. Every unnecessary JavaScript file running on page load delays LCP. Audit what's actually needed and cut everything else.
- Minimize render-blocking resources. CSS and JavaScript that the browser has to fully parse before rendering content directly increases LCP time.
Netalico has completed hundreds of Shopify builds and optimizations across clients including Big Green Egg, Oatly, and Rifle Paper Co. Across that work, image optimization and script cleanup account for the majority of LCP improvements we achieve. The site-specific work involves identifying exactly which element is triggering the LCP measurement and tracing every dependency that slows its load.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Core Web Vitals directly affect Shopify SEO rankings?
Yes. Google has confirmed that Core Web Vitals are a ranking signal. They're not the dominant factor for most queries, but on competitive keywords where content quality is comparable across pages, a strong Core Web Vitals score can be the tiebreaker.
How long does it take to see Core Web Vitals improvements after making changes?
Google Search Console updates its Core Web Vitals data on a rolling 28-day basis. Expect to wait two to four weeks before your improvements are fully reflected in the report. Lighthouse gives you real-time feedback after each change if you want immediate confirmation.
Can Shopify apps hurt Core Web Vitals scores?
Definitively yes. Third-party apps are the most common source of CLS and LCP issues on Shopify stores. Each app that runs JavaScript or injects HTML into your page adds load time and potential layout shift. Review your app stack regularly and remove anything that isn't earning its place.
