Squarespace to Shopify Migration
Upgrade your Squarespace site to a real ecommerce platform
Squarespace is a beautiful place to build a first ecommerce site. It's also a common place for growing brands to hit a ceiling. Squarespace Commerce covers the basics well, but once sales volume grows, the platform's limits around apps, checkout customization, SEO control, and integrations start getting in the way of real commerce operations.
Netalico handles the full Squarespace to Shopify migration for growing DTC brands: every URL redirected, all customer and order data ported, content and blog migrated, and SEO preserved. Most Squarespace projects launch in 6 to 10 weeks on a clean Shopify store, with Shopify Plus available as an upgrade path when scale requires it.

Testimonials
Seth Ross | Owner & Co-Founder, Lovey & Grink
Thanks to Netalico, our conversion rate increased significantly. When we started working with them, our conversion rate was around 1.75%, and we now have a 2.4% conversion rate, which is great. Moreover, Netalico did a really good job at implementing helpful features on our site. Among the most helpful improvements were a new recommendation engine, a wholesale ordering platform, and more compelling product description pages.

Their experience with migration is something not all agencies have. A lot of agencies can do all sorts of development work, but e-commerce has a lot of nuances that are important to understand. They are skilled in what they do and we have a great rapport with Mark.

Netalico Commerce has been doing maintenance and upgrades for our existing Magento website and customer portal to make our ordering process more efficient and solve its current issues. When they came in, we told them what our problems were and solved everything within a couple of months.

Migrating from Squarespace to Shopify brings up questions about data, SEO, redirects, cost, timeline, and which Shopify plan to choose. Here are the answers to the ones we hear most often. Still curious? Click the button for more, or book a free strategy call.
More FAQsHow long does a Squarespace to Shopify migration take?
Most Squarespace to Shopify migrations run 6 to 10 weeks from kickoff to launch. Simpler Squarespace stores (under 500 SKUs, standard theme port) can ship in 4 to 6 weeks. Stores with heavy content, subscription products, or custom design work run closer to 10 to 12 weeks.
How much does a Squarespace to Shopify migration cost?
Typical Squarespace to Shopify migration pricing ranges from $8,000 to $25,000 for most DTC brands. Simple catalog and theme moves land at the lower end. Custom design work, subscription billing, or heavy content migration pushes projects into the $20,000 to $35,000 range. Book a free strategy call for a scoped estimate.
Will I lose SEO when migrating from Squarespace to Shopify?
No, not if the migration is done right. Squarespace URL structures differ from Shopify's, so redirect planning is critical. Every Squarespace URL gets a 301 redirect to its Shopify equivalent, metadata ports over completely, and rankings are monitored for 60 days post-launch. Most merchants hold or grow organic traffic within 30 to 45 days of the switch.
Do I need Shopify Plus or is standard Shopify enough?
For most Squarespace merchants, standard Shopify is the right starting point. Shopify's Basic, Shopify, and Advanced plans cover everything a growing DTC brand needs until annual revenue crosses roughly $1 million. Shopify Plus becomes relevant when B2B, multi-store, heavy checkout customization, or Launch Engineer support becomes a real requirement. Upgrading from standard Shopify to Plus later is straightforward and doesn't require another migration.
What data gets migrated from Squarespace to Shopify?
Products, variants, pricing, inventory, images, collections, customer accounts, order history, blog posts, and any existing URL redirects. Squarespace's export tooling is limited compared to Shopify-native exports, so we use a combination of CSV export, content-extraction tooling, and targeted API work to move everything across cleanly.
Can you rebuild my Squarespace apps and integrations on Shopify?
Yes. Most Squarespace extensions have direct Shopify app equivalents or close substitutes (Klaviyo for email, Yotpo for reviews, Recharge for subscriptions, Gorgias for helpdesk, LoyaltyLion for loyalty). Squarespace Commerce's built-in features that don't have direct Shopify parallels get rebuilt as custom Shopify functionality during migration.
How do you handle 301 redirects from Squarespace URLs?
Squarespace URL structures (especially for collections and product pages) don't map one-to-one to Shopify's, so every Squarespace URL requires an explicit 301 redirect. We export the full URL list from Squarespace, generate the redirect map during the build, upload it via Shopify's URL Redirects importer, and validate coverage before launch. Sitemap, robots.txt, and canonical tags regenerate on launch day.
How soon can we start a Squarespace to Shopify migration?
Typically 1 to 3 weeks from signed SOW to kickoff. Smaller Squarespace projects can start within a week when timing is urgent.
What happens after the Squarespace to Shopify migration launches?
We include a 2-week post-launch stabilization window in base scope for bug fixes, small tweaks, and performance monitoring. For ongoing support, Netalico offers retainers and hourly packages that keep the same team engaged on your store.
Can you migrate my Squarespace blog and content to Shopify?
Yes. Squarespace blog posts, images, categories, tags, and author information migrate into Shopify's blog system. Blog URL structures get 301-redirected from Squarespace to Shopify paths. Static content pages (About, Contact, FAQ, policies) migrate into Shopify's Pages section with URLs preserved where possible.

Squarespace vs Shopify: feature comparison at a glance
Squarespace Commerce merchants who outgrow the platform compare a move to Shopify on seven dimensions. Standard Shopify (Basic, Shopify, or Advanced plans) is the right tier for stores under $1M annual GMV; Shopify Plus is the right tier above $1M when you need checkout customization, native B2B, or multi-store. Here is how Squarespace and the two Shopify tiers compare:
Ecommerce feature depth
- Squarespace: Basic ecommerce: products, variants, and a simple checkout. Limited inventory management, no native subscriptions, no B2B.
- Shopify (standard): Full ecommerce platform: variants, bundles, gift cards, native abandoned-cart recovery, and inventory management.
- Shopify Plus: Same as standard, plus native B2B (company accounts, price lists, quote workflows) and Shopify Functions for custom logic.
Product limits and catalog complexity
- Squarespace: Practical limit around 10,000 products; awkward for stores with deep variants or compound options.
- Shopify (standard): Tested at hundreds of thousands of SKUs; 100 variants per product, 2,000 product limits raised on Advanced plan.
- Shopify Plus: Same as standard with higher API rate limits for catalog syncs.
Payment processors
- Squarespace: Stripe, PayPal, Square, and Afterpay only. No flexibility on processor choice or rate negotiation.
- Shopify (standard): Shopify Payments plus 100+ third-party gateways (Stripe, Adyen, Worldpay, etc.). Negotiate rates above $1M GMV.
- Shopify Plus: Same as standard, with custom processor agreements available.
App and integration ecosystem
- Squarespace: Around 30 native integrations and a small extension marketplace. Most growth tools require manual workarounds.
- Shopify (standard): 10,000+ apps with native Klaviyo, Gorgias, Rebuy, Yotpo, ReCharge, ShipStation, and most growth tools.
- Shopify Plus: Same as standard.
SEO control
- Squarespace: Decent on-page SEO but limited control over URL structure, schema markup, and redirect rules.
- Shopify (standard): Full control over URL handles, meta tags, schema, robots.txt, and 301 redirects.
- Shopify Plus: Same as standard, plus dedicated technical-SEO support during migration.
Checkout and conversion
- Squarespace: Standard hosted checkout, no Shop Pay equivalent.
- Shopify (standard): Shop Pay (Shopify reports 5-10% higher conversion than guest checkout) plus Apple Pay and Google Pay native.
- Shopify Plus: Adds checkout extensions, scripts, custom logic, and gift-with-purchase rules.
Pricing
- Squarespace: $23-$72 per month for Commerce plans plus 2.9% + 30 cents transaction fees.
- Shopify (standard): $39-$399 per month, no platform-side transaction fees beyond standard processing.
- Shopify Plus: Starts at $2,500 per month with volume-based pricing above $800,000 monthly GMV.
Most Squarespace Commerce merchants migrate to standard Shopify for the deeper ecommerce feature set, payment-processor flexibility, and app ecosystem. Brands above $1M annual GMV typically choose Shopify Plus for B2B, multi-store, and checkout customization that Squarespace never offered.
How to evaluate a Squarespace to Shopify migration partner
Squarespace Commerce to Shopify migrations are usually clean because product and customer data export reliably, but design parity and SEO preservation are where the work concentrates. The partner you choose should be specific about both.
- Squarespace data export experience. Squarespace exports products, customers, and orders to CSV, but blog posts, page content, and media require manual handling. Ask how the partner extracts and re-imports content with formatting and SEO metadata intact.
- Redirect mapping for the URL pattern shift. Squarespace uses `/products/` and `/blog/` patterns that overlap with Shopify but differ in handle generation. The partner should build a complete redirect map and verify it post-launch.
- Design fidelity translation. Squarespace's design strength is its visual templates. The partner should show you how they translate your Squarespace site into a Shopify theme without losing brand consistency, and where Shopify Liquid will let you do more than Squarespace ever could.
- Post-launch retainer and ongoing optimization. Squarespace merchants tend to be brand-led, not technical. The partner should offer a retainer model that covers theme updates, CRO testing, and app integrations rather than pushing project-then-handoff.
- Time-to-launch on a working store. A Squarespace Commerce migration on a typical catalog (under 1,000 SKUs) launches in 6 to 10 weeks. Brands with custom design needs or larger catalogs run 10 to 16 weeks.
