If your store gets steady traffic but the sales don't keep up, you've probably tried a new homepage banner, a discount pop-up or yet another app and waited to see what happened. A Shopify CRO checklist is a more reliable way to find the leak: you walk through every step from landing page to checkout, spot what stops people from buying and fix the costliest problems first.
The gap you're closing is often bigger than it feels. The median Shopify store converts 1.4% of sessions while the top 10% clear 3.6%, according to Littledata's October 2026 benchmark across 433 stores.
This checklist follows the order we work in at Netalico: get your data right, go through the store page by page, then rank fixes by revenue. It also covers Shopify's 2026 changes, including the Scripts shutdown and the August checkout upgrade, which older checklists don't account for.
What This Shopify CRO Checklist Covers
A complete pass looks at the store from four angles, because conversion problems rarely show up in just one of them:
|
Area |
What you check |
Where the evidence comes from |
|
Funnel data |
Drop-off between product view, add to cart, checkout and purchase, by device and traffic source |
Shopify Analytics, GA4 |
|
Shopper behavior |
Where people hesitate, rage-click or abandon |
Heatmaps, session recordings, on-site surveys |
|
Technical health |
Speed, Core Web Vitals, broken features, app conflicts, tracking accuracy |
Shopify's Web performance dashboard, browser testing, test orders |
|
Offer and trust |
Pricing clarity, shipping and returns terms, reviews, payment options |
Page review, customer service tickets, competitor checks |
Before You Start: Get Your Data Right
Check Your Purchase Tracking
Before you change anything on the store, make sure your sales numbers are accurate, since every decision in this checklist relies on them. Two Shopify changes in 2026 broke purchase tracking for a lot of stores, so this is the first thing to check.
Shopify Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026. Older Thank you and Order status pages were also upgraded automatically after August 26, 2026, which removed any tracking code added there, so GA4 and your ad platforms may have stopped recording some sales.
To check, place a test order and confirm the purchase shows up in GA4 and each ad platform, with your pixels set up through Shopify's customer events. Then compare a week of orders in your analytics with Shopify's own sales report, and if the numbers don't roughly match, fix the tracking before moving on.
Benchmark Your Conversion Rate
Know where you stand before you decide how far to push. Littledata's October 2026 data puts the median Shopify store at 1.4% and the mean at 1.9%, with the top 20% above 2.7% and the top 10% above 3.6%. Mobile drives most of the traffic, too: the median store gets 67% of its sessions from phones, according to Littledata's mobile benchmark.
Segment your own rate by device, traffic source and new versus returning visitors. A store converting at 2% overall can be at 3.5% on desktop and 1% on mobile, and that split tells you where to look first.
The Tools You Need
You can work through this checklist without expensive software:
-
Shopify Analytics: the conversion funnel and sales by channel, device and landing page.
-
GA4: deeper segmentation, paths and campaign data.
-
Heatmaps and session recordings: Microsoft Clarity is free and shows where shoppers hesitate.
-
Shopify's Web performance dashboard: real-visitor Core Web Vitals over the last 30 days.
-
An on-site survey: one question at checkout exit ("What stopped you today?") often explains what the data can't.
If your store has little traffic, lean on the checklist fixes rather than A/B tests, because tests need enough orders to give a reliable answer.
The Shopify CRO Checklist, Page by Page
Work through these in order, starting with the issues that affect every page and ending at checkout and beyond. Mark each item as passing, failing or untested, and note the evidence.
Site Speed and Core Web Vitals
Speed sits first because it touches every visit. In a Google-commissioned study by Deloitte, a 0.1-second improvement in mobile site speed lifted retail conversion rates by 8.4% (web.dev).
✓ Largest Contentful Paint is 2.5 seconds or less, Interaction to Next Paint is 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift is 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile on mobile and desktop (web.dev)
✓ Every installed app still earns its place, and removed apps left no scripts behind
✓ Hero images and product images are sized for the screen they load on
✓ No pop-up, chat widget or review script blocks the page from becoming usable
Homepage and Navigation
✓ The first screen on mobile says what you sell and why someone should buy it from you
✓ Menu labels use the words shoppers search for, not internal category names
✓ The free-shipping threshold or current offer is visible without scrolling
✓ Site search autocompletes, handles misspellings and synonyms, and never returns a dead end
Collection Pages and Search Results
✓ Filters cover what shoppers actually choose by (size, price, color, availability) and work on mobile
✓ Product cards show price, key variants and review stars
✓ Out-of-stock items are labeled or pushed down, not left at the top of the grid
✓ Zero-result searches suggest alternatives instead of an empty page
Product Pages
✓ Images and video show scale, detail and the product in use
✓ Variant choices are obvious, and the price updates when a variant changes
✓ Shipping cost, delivery estimate and returns terms sit near the add-to-cart button
✓ Reviews, size guides and FAQs answer the questions customer service hears most
✓ Add-to-cart stays reachable on mobile, through a sticky bar or a short page
Cart and Cart Drawer
✓ The cart shows the full cost, including shipping, or says exactly when it will
✓ A free-shipping progress bar reflects the real threshold
✓ Quantities and variants can be edited without leaving the cart
✓ Express checkout buttons, including Shop Pay, appear before the main checkout button
✓ Upsells are relevant and don't push the checkout button below the fold
Checkout
Checkout is where the most revenue leaks. Baymard Institute puts the average documented cart abandonment rate at 70.22%, and its survey of US shoppers shows what drives it:
|
Reason shoppers abandon |
Share |
What to check |
|
Extra costs too high (shipping, tax, fees) |
40% |
Costs shown early on product and cart pages, with no surprises at checkout |
|
Delivery was too slow |
20% |
Delivery estimates and faster options at checkout |
|
Didn't trust the site with card details |
19% |
Recognizable payment badges, a clean and consistent checkout design |
|
Site wanted me to create an account |
18% |
Guest checkout on; account creation offered after purchase |
|
Checkout too long or complicated |
17% |
One-page checkout, address autocomplete, no unnecessary fields |
|
Website had errors or crashed |
17% |
Test orders on every device and payment method after each change |
✓ One-page checkout is on, which Shopify has made the default for most plans
✓ Shop Pay is enabled; Shopify reports it can convert up to 50% better than guest checkout
✓ Discount codes, gift cards and free-shipping rules apply correctly, now that Scripts no longer run
✓ The checkout editor branding matches the store (available on all plans); Shopify Plus stores can also add apps to the information, shipping and payment steps
Mobile Experience
Mobile is the main channel, not a secondary one: 56.4% of US online holiday transactions in 2025 happened on smartphones, according to Adobe.
✓ Buttons and links are easy to tap, with no accidental taps on neighbors
✓ Forms bring up the right keyboard (numeric for phone and card fields)
✓ Pop-ups don't cover the page on load, and they close easily
✓ The full path from homepage to order confirmation works on an actual phone, not just a resized browser
Trust, Reviews and Policies
✓ Returns and exchange terms are short, clear and linked from product pages (13% of Baymard's respondents abandoned over returns policy)
✓ Reviews show recent dates and include some critical ones
✓ Contact options are easy to find, and response times are stated
Post-Purchase and Retention
✓ The order status page confirms what happens next and when
✓ Post-purchase offers are relevant to what was just bought
✓ Welcome, abandoned-cart and post-purchase email and SMS flows are live and tested
Accessibility
✓ Images have alt text, buttons have labels, and color contrast passes WCAG guidelines
✓ The whole checkout can be completed with a keyboard alone
Accessibility fixes help every shopper, and they reduce legal risk too. Our Shopify maintenance guide covers the compliance side.
How to Prioritize Your CRO Fixes
A full pass through this checklist turns up dozens of issues, and fixing them in the order you found them wastes months. Rank them by revenue instead:
-
Estimate the revenue at stake. Multiply the sessions that reach the problem step by the drop-off you could realistically recover and by your average order value. A cart issue seen by 20,000 sessions a month is worth more than a homepage tweak seen by 2,000.
-
Score the effort. A settings change takes an hour; a new product page template takes weeks.
-
Rate your confidence. Issues backed by data, recordings and customer complaints rank above hunches.
-
Ship the obvious fixes. Broken tracking, bugs, missing shipping information and slow apps don't need a test; fix them this week.
-
Test the trade-offs. Changes that could cut both ways, like a new product page layout or a different upsell, belong in an A/B test.
Shopify now has testing built in. Rollouts, under Markets, can schedule or test changes to your theme, checkout, discounts and catalog. Scheduled rollouts are on the Basic plan and up, and experiments need the Grow plan or higher. Whatever tool you use, decide your sample size before the test starts and let it run to the end instead of stopping when the early numbers look good.

Shopify CRO Checklist FAQs
How long does a Shopify CRO checklist take?
A thorough first pass takes a few days once your data is clean. If you'd rather hand it to an expert, Netalico's fixed-scope CRO audit is delivered in 5 to 10 business days, followed by a review meeting.
What is a good Shopify conversion rate in 2026?
Littledata's October 2026 benchmark puts the median Shopify store at 1.4% and the mean at 1.9%. Stores above 2.7% are in the top 20%, and above 3.6% puts you in the top 10%.
How do I improve my Shopify conversion rate?
Confirm your tracking works, benchmark your conversion rate by device and channel, then work through every page from homepage to checkout. Fix the issues with the most revenue at stake first, and A/B test changes that could cut both ways.
What tools do I need for Shopify CRO?
Shopify Analytics, GA4, a heatmap and session-recording tool like Microsoft Clarity, Shopify's Web performance dashboard and a short on-site survey. Rollouts handles A/B tests on the Grow plan and above.
How often should I work through a CRO checklist?
At least once a year, plus after a redesign, a platform migration or a big app change, and about two months before peak season, so fixes are live before your highest-traffic weeks.
Is CRO different for Shopify Plus stores?
The principles are the same, but Plus gives you more room in checkout: apps on the information, shipping and payment steps, and deeper branding control. Every plan can use the checkout editor and Rollouts.
How much does Shopify CRO cost?
A DIY pass with this checklist costs only your team's time. Netalico's fixed-scope CRO audit costs $1,800, and ongoing CRO retainers that implement and test the fixes run from $2,700 to $10,000 a month.
