What Is Agentic Commerce?

Agentic commerce is the shift where AI agents discover, compare, and buy on a shopper's behalf, instead of the shopper browsing a store themselves. A customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot to find and buy a product, and the agent does the searching, comparing, and checkout through open commerce protocols.

For a Shopify brand it is already real: Shopify turned Agentic Storefronts on by default for eligible US merchants in 2026, syndicating products into ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini, and reports AI store traffic up roughly 8x and AI-attributed orders up about 11 to 13x year over year, with AI-referred shoppers converting around 50% higher than organic search on product pages.

The Two Protocols Your Store Has to Support

US shoppers split across two competing open standards, so your store has to feed both. Shopify abstracts much of it, but the merchant still has to be eligible and feed clean data to each.

ACP, the ChatGPT side

The Agentic Commerce Protocol, built by OpenAI and Stripe, powers shopping in ChatGPT. Instant Checkout is live but narrowed to a small set of large retailers, with OpenAI steering most brands to discovery plus merchant-controlled checkout. A 4% OpenAI fee applies only to orders completed inside ChatGPT; click-throughs to your own store pay only standard processing, and there is no Shopify channel fee.

UCP, the Google side

The Universal Commerce Protocol, co-built by Google and Shopify, powers Google AI Mode and Gemini. Shopify ships the UCP and MCP endpoints to every store automatically; custom and Hydrogen stores had to migrate to the new endpoint by June 15, 2026. Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity reach the same Shopify Catalog syndication.

Payment rails (Visa Intelligent Commerce, Mastercard Agent Pay, Google AP2) sit underneath. For most DTC brands there is nothing to build there: a Stripe-based checkout or Shop Pay already accepts the agentic tokens.
